Which is a better method of traveling, bus or train?
Nov 5, 2007 07:59
guestjusalilblu Hello all,
I am planning to visit China in about a month. I've been doing some research and planning out my routes. However, I'm not sure whether traveling by train or bus would be better from one location to another. Below is the planned route, please feel free to give me suggestions on whether I should go by train or bus. Your help will be appreciated.

Shanghai to Hangzhou: I'm planning to go by train
Hangzhou to Suzhou to Wuxi, to Nanjing: Hangzhou to Suzhou, is it better by train or bus? Suzhou to Wuxi and Wuxi to Nanjing will probably be better by bus?
Nanjing to Beijing: I think train would be best
Beijing to Xian: Train
Xian to Zhengzhou: Train or bus?
Zhengzhou to Shanghai: Train or bus?
Or I might just go straight to Shanghai from Xian, are there any attractions in Zhengzhou??

Shanghai -- Hangzhou: train
Hangzhou -- Suzhou: bus
Suzhou -- Wuxi: train
Wuxi -- Nanjing: train
Nanjing -- Beijing: overnight train
Beijing -- Xi'an: overnight train
Xi'an -- Zhengzhou: overnight train
Zhengzhou -- Shanghai: overnight train, or budget flight
Most worthwhile attraction around Zhengzhou would be Shaolin Temple, about 2 hours away by bus. Or Kaifeng, about 1.5 hours away by train/bus.

GUESTJUSALILBLU Thanks Ellyse, for your suggestions! Do the Shaolin Temple and Kaifeng locate in Zhengzhou city? If not then I could probably go straight to those places instead of stopping in Zhengzhou.

Hi,GUESTJUSALIL,

Ellyse give good idea on bus and train & we also have to remind that you can adjust bus or train per actual situation for time to some extent to meet your timetable.

Take it easy & enjoy!

Shaolin Temple is west of Zhengzhou.
Kaifeng is east of Zhengzhou.
Neither of those are located in Zhengzhou city. Kaifeng is a city in its own right.

When you get overnight trains, make sure you book a hard bed. If you end up with a seat, it will be the worst night of your life, and you'll probably have your things stolen. Hard bed class doesn't actually have hard beds - they are quite comfortable. You'll have a choice of top, middle, or bottom. The disadvantage with the top is that is can get hot and smelly up there. The advantage is that it's safe and quiet. The advantage with the bottom is that you can sit on the bed and look out of the window, plus keep an eye on your bag underneath. The disadvantage is that other people will tread on you when climbing to the higher beds, and during the day will sit on your bed! Best go for the middle! I love traveling by overnight train in China, and it's safer (from an accident point of view) than the bus. China's road safety record is not good!

Agree. I would take trains over buses for the majority of overland travel in China.

GUEST19461 You over-exagrate the problem with safety on trains, ive travelled plenty of times without encounting any problems. If your english your be watched by security personal. Its also not that bad. Basically its like being cramped on the plane, but at least you get the so called fresh air, although we're inclined to argue how fresh it really is, haha.
Buses take forever on some routes, specially if your incoming from Vietnam or Laos.
