Sanya is a world-famous tropical seashore tour-enjoying and ecological Demonstration City. And it is the most important political, economic, cultural and foreign trade port in the southern part of Hainan, also a famous coastal tourist city with tropical landscapes and special local customs.

Located on the southern tip of Hainan Island, Sanya stands between 18?9'and 18?7' latitude almost the same as Hawaii. Thus, it's often called "the Hawaii of China" or "orient Hawaii". Situated in the center of Southeast Asia, Sanya is a highly convenient place for exchange with countries in Southeast Asia. It is also an important sea route connecting China with Southwest Asia, Africa and Europe. The area of Sanya is about 1,919 square kilometers, 91.6 kilometers long from the east to the west, and 51.2 kilometers wide from the north to the south. It lies in the southern valley of the Wuzi Mountain range, and stretches from the higher north to the lower south. With a coastline of 209.1 kilometers, it has 10 islets and 19 harbors. Among them, the West Daimaozhou islet is the biggest of all, on which there are nearly two big harbors, and the Sanya harbor has now become an important port of entry-and exit for deluxe passengers ships and for trade with foreign countries. Sanya has an international modern airport--SYPIA(SANYA PHOENIX INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT) which is the second largest in Hainan Province, with flights to domestic and foreign cites.

Sanya City is a tropical international tourist city. It enjoys clean seawater, fresh air, beautiful beaches and bright sunshine and is rich in natural tropical scenery and historical sites. Its tourist attractions include Yalong Bay National holiday Resort,Dadonghai Tourist Zone,TianyaHaijiao,Luhuitou Park,Nanshan Cultural and Tourist Zone, the marvelous landscape of mountains and seas at Nanshan,Wuzhizhou Island, the Ancient City of Yazhou,Shuinan Village,Luobidong Cavern and the Muslim tombs built in Tang & Song dynasties, etc. Local specialties include handicrafts made of seashells,horn-ware,coconut shell carving products, squid and pepper, etc.

More than 20 nationalities, including Han, Li, Miao, and Hui, inhabit the city. There are altogether more than 483,100 people, among them 149,800 are registered for permanent residence(in 2000). Languages used here are dialects of Hainan, Junhua, Maihua, and Lihua Danjiahua, besides Putonghua, the common language in China.

Tourist Resources
Sanya is superior in geography climate and natural resources. It is known as " the oriental Hawaii" and " Sunshine City" because of its special tropical scenes as well as its attractive nature. Sanya's tourist resources, richly endowed by nature, are not only special in China, but also rare in the world. It is a most fashionable place where tropical marine tourist resources are closely concentrated and lovers of swimming can enjoy their holidays in winter.
Within the city, well-known tourist spots are dotted everywhere--the national Yalong Tourist Area, the Tianyahaijia, the Great Eastern Sea, the Luhuitou Peninsula, Sanya Bay and the Luobi Grotto. Besides these, there remain the ancient Yazhou City and relics and a sculpture of the Monk Jianzhen of the Tang Dynasty, who landed ashore to avoid the storm when he was sailing eastwards to Japan. Now the Buddhist Cultural Sightseeing spot has been partly completed and opened to the public. The Nation Hot Springs area is now under construction. It is rare that a city can concentrate all such resources: sunshine, seawater, beaches, climate, forest, animals, hot springs, grottos, customs and countryside. According to statistics, the average per capita life span of Sanya people has risen to 74.5 year old, the highest in China.

"and the night market here is especially lively with seafood thrown on the streets, stores selling all types of weird and wonderful wares (including smuggled goods from Vietnam) and huge tea warehouses, all adding to the chaotic feeling about this place."

Largely a result of the climate shows that most of the entertainment in the tropical zone takes place at night, and Sanya is of no exception either. As the sun sets, bars and tea houses open their doors onto the beaches and bays, and there is a real feeling here that life begins after dusk.
And most of the large hotels in Sanya are well furnished with huge nightclubs. Among these, the bar in the Fudao Hotel is the most impressive and most of the hotel bars in Yalong Bay attract a nice crowd.
