I just want to know what everyones opinion is on the fireworks night we celebrate in UK. November the 5th every year.
The night is full of bonfires where we burn images of Guy Falkes and set off many fireworks. We have parties and everyone has happy time etc etc.

Guy many years ago tried to blow up our Parliament with gunpowder, He failed and was sentenced to death.

I just cant help wondering, today if someone tries the same thing they are called a terrorist. So why do we try to make a night of celebration out of a terrorist act? even though he failed.

Yes Dave, the plot was to kill the Protestant goverment, he was a Catholic which I believe the goverment were trying to do away with the religion.

Who was Guy Falkes? Why do you guys celebrate on November the 5th? Dave and Alan, could you tell us more about him and your history? I feel puzzled about what you talked about.

I have known about some about the festival in our English books, but not remember clearly now. So I guess the festival is quite important, at least the passing event is epochal in your history, or for the present government.
Is that celebrated every year by since it was born, without any pause?

Dave and Allen,
I still remember walking the streets asking for a penny for the Guy. Never earned very much though as me Guy was usually rubbish.
But every one lit bonfires in the street and let off fireworks and we roasted nuts and food on the fire and people who had not spoken all year said hello.
As I understand it Guy Falkes ( not sure of the spelling) hired a room under the Houses of Parliament and put large barrels of gunpowder. His plot to blow up the Parliament was discovered by chance the night before.
The Roman Catholics had been excluded from holding any high office in Britain at the time.
The King or Queen is still even to this day not allowed to marry a Catholic.

Thats right Dodger, I remember making my " guy " and doing the penny for the guy bit too even though it was about 43 years ago and I have trouble remembering 20 mins ago, he he
The bonfires we used to build would be the size of a house, once someone set fire to it before the day so we had to collect more rubbish to build another one, we managed to build huge bonfire and the night went well, lots of food etc consumed.

I love 'penny for the guy' its great. I would give the child a penny and walk off with their guy, fair exchange but they never quite saw it that way.
