Karl Marx is a dreamer. Communism has never worked and will never work for the simple reason that its basic premises run counter to human nature. Communism stifles initiative and creativity, two factors which are essential to personal and economic growth. As for the question at hand, credit should be given to the Central govt. for having the foresight to realize that without the capital of the West, Mao's proletarian paradise was headed for a humanitarian disaster.

Having said this, you must realize that opening the country to the West is a two edged sword. If you think that the standard of living has improved for the common man, just imagine how it has improved for the unelected and unaccountable "leaders". Billions of dollars ( yes, dollars, not rmb ) which could be spent on improving living standards of the farmers here ( as one example ) are finding their way into the pockets of govt. parasites. Govt. workers do not contribute to the economy; instead they are a drain on the economy, and nothing happens here without their approval. This is personal initiative and creativity, Chinese style, with the protection of the govt.

GUESTSTELLA I think the most influential reason is Sinocentrism. China was the most powerful country before modernization. So Chinese want to recover the flourish of past. That's why Chinese have so much pride even though they are not that much developed yet. Their willingness to recover the past flourish will give them the power for the future.

Thank you for the participation, ladies & gentlemen.

I do not agree totally on the notion that Communism can never work for an economy. I must agree tho that in a way, in runs against human nature.
Communism is a concept that is more suitable for a seriously fagging economy and where a re-start is necessary. Not all economies can apply communism because the real-life fact is that some capitalist countries are counter it and would go all out to make a country trying to re-start via communism, very difficult. We have witnessed this in the first 30 yours of its implementation via the cases of China, N.Korea, Vietnam & Cuba. Leadership aside, such countries must preferably be self-sufficient or have other nations who are prepared to lend a helping hand.
Once the economy recovers and is on way, then it should switch from communism to capitalism to reach further height. I believe China is applying this now.
