it looks like the second week of my trip will be mainly in beijing. are there any places around beijing that might be fun to see? any day trips or even overnighters that are only a train ride away and that we shouldn't miss?

i hate to reply to my own post before anyone else, but i was also wondering if its worth it to go to xian. i know the terra cotta warriors are there, but is it worth a whole flight in and out of there to go?

Xi'an doesn't have to be a flight away. It's perfectly doable by overnight train there and back. It's good for a 3N2D trip from Beijing.
Same goes for Shanghai, and other destinations such as Harbin, Taishan and Huangshan.
Shenyang is only 4 hours by D train each way, could be done as a 1N2D trip.
Difficult to recommend when you provide no information about your sightseeing interests and preferences.

thanks ellyse,
i'll fill you in a bit more.
we're starting in shanghai, and we are going to check out tongli and naanjing from there.
next we go to guilin and yongshuo.
then to beijing.
so basically, i'm wondering if there is something around beijing that is different from what we are seeing in all those other places.
i think we'd like to check out a small town that ' full of raw culture and maybe a temple or two.

For those requirements I would suggest perhaps Huangshan, Chengde or even Chengdu, if you could afford to fly.

Hi seaninwinter,

Presumably you mean places other than the usual suspects: Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, Forbidden City etc... ?

You could try checking out the Lama Temple, it's popular but still impressive. I believe I'm right in saying it's the largest one outside of Tibet.

Also, why not try the Laoshe Teahouse, for a great tea-house experience and some traditional music.

Finally, check out an evening Beijing Opera show. Laoshe Tea house does a great show of mixed Chinese arts or there are theatres/hotels around BJ with nightly shows.

Have a great trip.
