![]() | Have you ever heard the term "overseas returnees"? The term is very popular in China. According to David Zweig, Director of the Center on China's Transnational Relations at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, there is no such term in the United States, Canada, or Europe, because in those cultures it is quite normal for a person to study abroad and then go back to his motherland. With the advancement of the Chinese education system, he believes an increasing number of people will go abroad and then return. The latest 2007 Ministry of Education data shows that from 1978 to 2006, a total of 1.067 million Chinese went abroad and 275,000 returned to China; 42,000 returned in 2006 alone. Some have already fulfilled their dreams, some are exploring their options, and others are lost in confusion. After about 30 years, the term 'overseas returnees' will disappear after 2," said Yang Zhuang, the American Dean of Beijing International MBA (BiMBA) and associate professor at the Business School of Fordham University. He was speaking at the 4th Western Returnees Beijing Forum 2007 (WRBF) with the theme "New returnees, new missions." China and India see the largest population of oversees returnees.David Zweig believes that they are a special group that only exists during a specific period of time when a nation's economic development increases the need for skilled workers. "A total of 1.067 million Chinese went abroad and 275,000 returned to China" There is a huge difference and it costs China a lot. What do you think of overseas returnees. Should all the nationals study abroad return to their motherland? . |

![]() | That's their choirce, if China wants to keep more overseas Chinese back, they should improve their conditions. But at the same time I also hate those who acturally have nothing to show off but returned with rather better rewards. I have heard that the same thing that is transferred from abroad might have a higher price. That's really unfair. |

![]() | Ellen77, You are right. Some so-called overseas returnees even holds the fake diplomas. Nowadays, quite a number of Chinese students can study abroad not because they are more intelligent than others but because their parents are richer than others. It is money that played an important role in competing for the opportunity to study abroad. |
