| Yesterday, Sampras and Federer had their games in Seoul. Eventually, Federer beat Sampras by 6 to 4 and 6 to 3. It is reported that those two top tennis players will have three games. On Nov. 22, they will play in Kuala Lumpur. On Nov. 24, they will meet in Macao. Next year, they will meet at Madison Square Garden. In your eys, who is stronger? Who will be the winner of the games? No.1 |

Who will be the winner of the games?<< Johnny, I participate in tennis discussion at another site and these three matchups between Federer and Sampras are a hot topic now. There is general agreement though about several things. Firstly, because these are exhibition matches, the players don't take them too seriously and therefore aren't giving it 100% usually. Their first priority is to entertain the crowds. After all they are each being paid large sums of money to play. Secondly, there is a 10 year age difference between Roger and Pete. You can't hide something like this. No matter how hard Pete will try, his body won't be able to respond the way it used to 10 years ago. Pete's biggest weapon continues to be his serve. The best he can hope for is to serve his way to a tie-break and then pray that he can come through winning the set. Many of us at the other site are predicting that Federer will actually let Sampras win the second match to give him some sense of pride with is current level of play. We also predict that Federer will win the third match. So in the end it will either be Federer 2 Sampras 1 or Federer 3 Sampras 0. |

CANADAGUY, you mean that Federer do not want Sampras to lose face in front of millions of fans? I guess that Federer will do it as you say. Sampras' physical condition is his biggest disadvantage. Just imagine: if they had the same physical conditions, who was stronger, Federer or Sampras? |

| >>CANADAGUY, you mean that Federer do not want Sampras to lose face in front of millions of fans? I guess that Federer will do it as you say. << That's it exactly. It will all depend on how gracious Federer is, or even what they may have planned ahead of the match. It's not unusual to have a basic script to work by. 'Let's throw in some of these and some of those. I'll give you the second set but you'll have to earn the third on your own!' >>Sampras' physical condition is his biggest disadvantage. Just imagine: if they had the same physical conditions, who was stronger, Federer or Sampras?<< Ah that's the million dollar question that everyone is debating. Personally I would give the edge to Federer. The one time they played together professionally in 2001 at Wimbledon, Federer won in five sets. He was still very young (20) and hadn't begun to assert himself on the tour yet. Sampras was close to retirement (30) but still had another slam in him (U.S. Open 2002). So even though there was the same 10 year age difference between them then, it was spread out more fairly than now. Federer was years away from his peak form and Sampras was just a few years after his peak form. The interesting story will be told in the coming years if/when Federer surpasses Sampras in total slams. |

BTW, what do you think of Nadal? He and Federer regard each other as deadly enemies. However, he seldom won Federer when they met. This guy seem to be born at the wrong time. |

| CANADAGUY, we both were wrong. It is reported that Federer defeated Sampras again. His serve is really his biggest weapon. The speed is about 210 kilometers per hour. Even Federer said that Sampras would be included Top 5 in tennis areana if he could keep his momentum like this and return to play tennis. BTW, Sampras said that there are less tennis players who can serve and volley. |

Nadal actually has a winning record (9-5) against Federer, something that most people aren't aware of. http://cbs.sportsline.com/ But most of his wins occured on clay court, a surface that Roger is not accustomed to. |

The quality of the second match was much better than the first though. There must be something in the Malaysian water :) So it will come down to Macao. I still can't see Pete winning though, as Federer would not want to leave a series of three matches on a losing note. It's not out of the question however (for Fed to lose) because they have another exhibition slated in early 2008 in the U.S. and Fed would surely make up for it there if he needed to. Yes it is a shame that there really aren't any decent serve and volleyers on the tour now. It's very exciting to watch that style of play. |
