![]() | Have you read Day of Empire: How Hyperpowers Rise to Global Dominance - And Why They Fail? It is written by Amy Chua, a professor in Yale. In her book, she mainly discusses about the toppling hyperpower---US and its ever-expanding rival----China. Undoubtedly, US is the No.1 strongest nation in the world. It dominates almost each sector and is the power house of world's economies and military. just think about the subprime crisis in US. Once US suffers from the credit crisis, the whole world trembles, global stocks dropping drastically and those bankings lost a large amount of money. However, it has been in trouble. The credit crisis has impacted US economy deeply. It is estimated that the economic growth in 2008 is between 2% to 2.5%, lower than that they estimated before---2.5% to 2.75%. They have spent millions of dollars in Iraqi war. But they can not anticipate when they will win it. Compared with US, his rivals including EU, China and India have been developing very fast and steadily. Who will replace US to be the hyperpower in the world, EU, China or India? Any opinions or replies are welcome. |

![]() | Interesting! Who is the hyperpower in today's world? United States. Although it is suffering economic recession, it still influenes the world on large scale and has its say in UN. I admit that China and India has made great achievements in economic development. Also their military strength has been improved a lot. However, I do not think that they can compete with US now and replace US. |

![]() | This seems to be a new thread extending an ongoing discussion...so I will make some comments here. In my mind, there is no question that China will be the next superpower. The USA is in decline as a result of a series of inept presidents and pandering to interest groups. It is true that the US is a large nation which helps maintain momentum in the workl economy (as does Europe). But growth is coming from China (and India and Russia to a lesser extent). This makes China important to the world...it represents NEW trade and wealth. It's size ensure the ret of the worls listens. You want proof? (now don't misunderstand the following as a criticism of China, it is not). It is irrelevant whether a nation supports China's One Nation Policy - but it will say it does. It will say this because it is required to to trade with China. No nation can afford not to trade with China, therefore it will say the sun rises in the west if that is what is required. THUS, we can see China has already achieved world power through it's economic might. China is driving the current world economic growth. Congratulations...and thanks... I am from Australia and our wealth and low cost of living is dependant on China. Later today we will have a new Prime Minister, one who believes in Asia and who is fluent in Mandarin....so I look forward to this relationship continuing. |
