Planning a trip to Harbin in 2006 for the Ice Festival. I am from the U. S. and would like to know if Harbin has food outlets such as McDonalds, Taco Bell, etc. Also, neither my husband or I speak any Chinese (though we will try to learn some prior to our visit) - will we be able to hire an English-speaking guide for a reasonable fee? Thank you to anyone who has information! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Bookish Angel in Richmond, Virginia USA

Hi, Happy New Year! For western food in Harbin, you may try the Portman, a lively cross between pub and bistro. It is located the north of the Modern Hotel. "Moscow potato salad (egg, mustard, and diced ham) and the restaurant's signature crisp pork ribs, deep fried and served with a small dish of spices for dipping, are both delicious. A wide range of chicken, fish, and pasta dishes is also available. Decent live-music performances run every night at 9pm." Hours: 11:00 am-2:00 am nest morning Address: Xiqi Daojie 63 Location: just off the Zhongyang Dajie, around the city Price for a main course: about RMB20-RMB50 ($3-$6) Have a nice time^_^

Why not Lucia? This small cafe decorated with heirlooms left behind by a Russian family is a rare reminder of China's treaty port days, when expatriates would suffer the chaos of pre-war China by day and retreat at night to the softly lit, lace-covered comfort of their homes to drink coffee and write fantastic letters to the people they'd left behind. The cafe, nestled inside the cracked-wall room of an old Russian building near the top of Zhongy?g Dàjie, serves a small but satisfying selection of Western dishes. Try the hearty red vegetable soup, or the "pot beef," a steaming stew of beef, carrot, and tomato. Or just spend the day here with a few cups of coffee and a book.
