![]() | Ming Dynasty witnessed the glory of China's marine exploration. Zheng He, the great admiral of Ming Dynasty made his great voyage. He with his men travelled to the coast of Red Sea. It is also said that he discovered America than Columbus. He spent 28 years (1405-1433) in the sea. During the final voyage, Zheng He contracted a disease and died in Calicut, southwest India. His body was brought back to China in July and he was buried on Niushou Hill (Bull's Head Hill). He was 62. In his era, there were numerous adventurers. Zheng He bore more sufferings. He was castrated at the age of 11. However, he lived the most dignigied life that was unmatched by his peers. He typified the Chinese saying: when Heaven is about to place a great responsibility on a great man,it always first frustrates his spirit and will, exhausts his muscles and bones,exposes him to starvation and poverty harasses him by troubles and setbacks so as to stimulate his spirit, toughen his nature and enhance his abilities. |

![]() | Admiral Zheng He actually travelled most countries around Indian Ocean. His travel route was the " Marine Silk Road" . However, the marine (overseas) exploration did not brought any practical profits for the government of Ming Dynasty. That was part of reasons for China's economic stagnation. Just imagine that the overseas exploration of English pirates in Elizabeth Era, the overseas exploration provided UK with adequate raw materials and treasure, which fuelled the growth of English Industry. |
