I used to live in Japan, I moved there alone when I was 19, had an ok time but decided ultimately that it wasn't for me and on my way back to the United States I stopped over in Shanghai for a month and stayed there with a Chinese girl that I knew. Well, a year has passed since I made it back to the states, and I'm heading back but this time I'm not just visiting (I met another Chinese girl, and we'll be living there together since that's where she's from). Anyhow, the advice I'm looking for is how to go about finding a job there as a laowai who currently only knows a precious little putonghua and hasn't finished college. What can I expect? I've been to the great republic before so I have had a taste, but I'm sure that Shanghai and Beijing are different places and have different local cultures (not to mention the languages are different from what I hear). I have a good idea regarding what I'll bring with me to beijing, and I plan to bring enough money with me to pre-pay rent for a few months if I can. Specifically: What should I bring? I read the articles about what others have brought to China when just visiting, but considering that I plan to live here for at least a year if not longer what should I pack? When is the best time of the year to get reasonable airfare? I need to get my entry visa renewed, but having some trouble finding the information online regarding that. When my girlfriend and I get our apartment what should I as a laowai watch out for? I'm half expecting to get scammed on rent. I hope my first post is appropriate, I'm no stranger to posting in online forums but this is the first time I've ever posted in one of this nature.
