Places to hang out in Guangzhou?

I will be in Guangzhou for a week attending a conference next week (Dec 3rd to 7th) and would like to know great hangout places, restaurants, sightseeing etc. For this duration, I am staying at the Garden hotel.
Much appreciated if you can help.

Spend some time exploring Shamian Island (shamian dao). Visit the old church there. Have tea at facing the garden courtyard.

Visit Beijing Lu for some shopping. Visit the Bar Streets after dark. etc

Thanks for your reply. I will definitely visit Shamian Island. Which bar do you prefer, why and the location with reference to the Garden Hotel?

in particular taste the Cantonese cuisine in a proper restaurant...
