| No.1 狐假虎威 (Hu 2 Jia 3 Hu 3 Wei 1) It means 'the fox borrow the tiger's fierceness----bulley people by flaunting ones' powerful connections.' History: One day, a tiger was very hungry and went hunting here and there. Luckily, he came across a fox. The tiger caught the fox and was preparing to eat it. While the fox said:" How dare you eat me? I am sent by the God to be the king of the beasts. If you eat me, God will punish you.' The tiger dubitated and did not know if he should eat the fox. Then the fox said:" Don't you believe what I said? Just come with me and see whether the beasts are afraid of me." The tiger agreed and walked behind the fox in the forest. All animals that saw the fox and tiger were trying to hide while seeing them. The tiger was quite surprised at this and thought that those animals were really afraid of the fox. Thus, he did not eat the fox. Actually, those animals were really afraid of the tiger. However, the tiger did not realize this and was fooled by the fox. |

| No.2 一鼓作气 (Yi 1 Gu 3 Zuo 4 Qi 4) It refers to 'press on to the finish without letup or get something done in one' sustained effort.' History: During the Spring and Autumn Period, the state of Qi sent his troops to battle with the state of Lu. The king of the state of Lu lead Cao Gui to take up the gauntlet. When the Qi drummers beat the drum and made their army to fight, the King of the state of Lu also ordered his army to attack. But Cao Gui stopped the king and said:"We should launch attack after the Qi drummer beat the drum at the third time." The king was quite puzzled. But he accepted Cao's advice. As expected, the state of Lu defeated the Qi and won the battle. Then the king of the state of Lu asked Cao Gui why they should attack after the Lu drummer beat the drum at the third time. Cao said:" Battle needs courage and morale. When the drummer beat the drum at the first time, Qi army's courage and morale were roused. At the second time, their courage and morale were reduced. At the third time, they were almost exhausted. That is why we defeated them." After hearing what Cao Gui said, the king of Lu was very happy and rewarded Cao. |
