From the Ancient to the present, climbing to the rank of officials have been an honorable dream for countless Chinese average people. Yesterday (December 10),the Ministry of Personnel announced that a total of 640,000 people sat for the annual qualification tests for national-level public servants. The exams were organized in 38 cities throughout the country, including Beijing, Shanghai and other municipalities, as well as provincial capitals, the ministry said. Have you ever thought why so many Chinese want to become officials? Public servants? Nowadays, the meaning of " Servant" has changed a lot. To be a servant means that you can have more privileges than the hosts. This is a new reality in China. How about the situation in your country? What do you think of China's servants? This is a very important aspect of Chinese culture. Work as officials is quite dignified in China.

I think in China, being a government official/public servant is where the money is but definitely not the U.S. One can do other things in the U.S. that pay a lot more than being a government official.

The similarities, though, I think is the job security and benefits. As a foreign service officer, you get your housing, children's education, tax -- basically everything, paid for. You even get the prestige of working in an American embassy in a foreign country.

A very close relation exists between politics and money. Entering into politics means that you will get more power in your hand. Power, in turn, will bring you enormous benefits and money. I think in USA the situation is the same. Just take the presidential election for example, if you have no money, get out of the election campaign, since presidential campaign needs a large amount of money. Here is a question: why do so many interest groups donate funds to the presidential candidates? The answer is quite simple: once the candidates land the presidential campaign, he will get power. Power generates enormous profits.
