I would appreciate your opinions on a query I have.
I recently made a website of my travel photos and it seems to be quite popular, I have had a few emails from people asking to buy my photos.

Question is how much to charge?
How much would you pay for a photo?

I have looked at other photo sites and the prices are frightening, way too expensive. I dont want to quote too much and at the same time I dont want to be too cheap.

Supply and demand, what the market will bear, though perhaps a concessionary price for non commercial use.

As I guy who always under-sells himself, I want to encourage you to get as much of the money on the table as you can. If you believe your competitor's are making money, base your pricing on them.

When I was voicing cartoons and TV & radio commercials the performer's union set rates based on usage. There is some overlap, so perhaps seeing AFTRA & SAG contracts will give you good ideas.

You must protect your copyrights to the work. Be certain to use steganography to embed your logo into the work; I believe the commercial name for it is digital watermarking...but true steganography is completely invisible without the encryption code. Trust me when I tell you that once you give your work to someone to use, it will be used over and over and over again without you earning fees.

I have looked at photo websites and seen as much as $95 for a small 9x6 inch print which is a joke.

maybe I need to do lots more research.

Yes Dave I would encourage you to do more research too.

The guys above have given you good advice so far.
I'm not a photographer (I'm a musician) so I can't give you the scoop on rates for pics etc.

But I can tell you that unless you protect your works as was mentioned, they will be copied and re-used etc.

So $95 may seem like a heck of a lot of money to "sell" one picture, but when it is re-used 100's of times you're getting less than $1 per pic.

It's kind of the same principal for software, or music, or literature, or ....

Make the 'principle'. We still don't have editing tools here, so I must add another post.

Davec,
Once you have factored in the cost of travel , the cost of the equipment, the years honing you skills to be able to take a decent picture perhaps your pricing is too cheap.
As Paul has said “take what the market can bear”
I’m involved in retail and wholesale. Consumers often read into what appears to be a cheap price as a product of poor quality.. So lowering the sales price often sends the wrong message.
You can always go down in price but it is harder to increase.
Cheers, Dodger.
