Bingyu (Ice-jade) Hall in Jun’an Town, Shunde, Guangdong is opening to the public step by step. Bingyu (Ice and Jade) means purity or virginity. The hall was once inhabited by zi shu nv, a historical event in the Pearl River Delta. In the end of Qing Dynasty, the Pearl River Delta was forced open and factories were set up, which provided work opportunities to girls in the area. With economic independence, they chose to be independent socially and refused to get married. The girls combed their hair into a certain style and invited guests to make it public that they would be single all life long. The hall was established in the 1950s for zi shu nv. Actually they donot live there for they live back with their families or relatives. This hall is for their meeting during the traditional festivals like the Spring Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival, etc. According to them, it is not true that this hall is never opened to men but they are not allowed to stay overnight. It is hard to understand what they think about their life but in an interview, they said that if time went back, they would not make such choice though they do not want to marry and do not envy those married sisters.
