I am intrested in going down the grand canal next June is the grand canal open from Beijing to Tianjin? If so is there a boat that you can take?

No, it's not.

Try Suhou to Shanghai or Hangzhou. Not really a comfortable trip but good fun.

Are you 100% sure? Why should they close? Last year I still used it and it is still promoted on this web page here. I just called a travel agent and he confirmed it's still open.

Because I've previously directed other travellers to try it, and more than one have reported to me that it was no longer running! Including a couple of Hangzhou residents, on separate occasions in 2007.
Main reason being that the buses and trains are faster and more convenient.
