Seeking information about Rizhao
Jan 2, 2008 17:41
Hello,
My husband and I are interested in living in Rizhao. We have read that this city is growing and doing a lot in the way of sustainability. Also pollution-wise it is supposed to be among the best. Has anyone been there? Is there anyone reading this who us living there now with whom we could correspond?
Also, I am interested in teaching English - does anyone have suggestions as to a reputable online TESL course to take? What kind of certificates or training does one need to get a job? Are there jobs available for people our age – (pushing 60)?
Any suggestions or comments are most welcome.

GUEST66181 i-to-i.com offers a decent on-line TEFL course with plenty of personal feedback. Be aware, however, that most of the activities they teach (geared toward a small, mixed nationality class) won't apply to a large Chinese class. If you are the students' first foreign teacher you will find them terrified to speak. This is the biggest challenge of teaching here. You don't need certification to get a job, but sometimes it helps your salary. A college degree is usually sufficient.

All I know about Rizhao is that there is almost nothing to do there. I would suggest looking in to some of the other port cities like Dalian or Qingdao (host of the 2008 Olympic sailing events) for pleasant living conditions, relatively clean air and more to do around town.

Good luck!

GUEST13897 I am seeking advise from any source on commercial printers and sea freight companies that operate from Rizhao, China. I am hoping someone may know of an organisation that may be able to assist.

GUESTCOFFEE there is a commercial printer in the university district catch the bus outside and across the road from EF english school. go all the way until it turns the corner, "a right turn at the university". get off the buss and look at the university. you will be looking at it from across the road. walk left. turn left at the first street. walk down to the first side street. turn left walk along about 200 meters. and on the left up the steps is a car park and the first double glass doors to the left is the big printing place.

GUESTCOFFEE i love rizhao its a ghost town in winter and full of excitment in summer. most of the locals are genuinly friendly. the life savers at the beach are really cool. beach #2. days hotel has a nice little bar where esl teachers like to go and meet before venturing out to other bars. excellent for international food. great korean food to :) i have been told by a lil birdy that EF is a good place to teach. however i would be causious about teaching at tv and radio university. my chinese wife and i were left stranded at the airport by that school on our arrival. :( it cost us a lot of money to go and teach there and we were left high and dry. the city is divided into 3 parts. most of the husstle and bustle happens in the old section. where the main bus depot is. most of the very modern neat clean western stuff is in the new government area. funny about that. i wanted to open a school there but due to an interesting, "local way of interpreting chinese law" they would only agree if we paid them money and made the 2 education division leaders partners :( we have spent the past 2 years investing our time and money there. so i love the place. the government leaders are really nice family people and are really interested in meeting "the foreigners". and you can surf 3 months a year. and a cool skate park.

GUESTGUESTQD I visit Rizhao often for business from Qingdao. I find it more polluted. But because there's very very few westerners there, it is always a little more interesting than the more gentrified and bigger cities of Shandong province. If you don't know any Chinese, and it's your first time coming to China, I wouldn't recommend it. But if you're after an adventure and are willing to learn the local language, it could be pretty good times.

GUEST53131 Having taught at the Tv and radio University from from October 2006 until May 2008 I can confirm that Guest Coffees concerns are ill founded. No one can be " stranded" at a airport with a direct regular express bus link to the University all hours of the day. The teachers are great, the students suberb and teaching support second to none.
