I will be in Beijing for Spring Festival and want to know what events will be held. Are there certain places to be or things to do in the city? I can make it for the beginning (New Years Eve and Day) or the end of the celebrations (Lantern Festival). What would be recommended?? Please give me as much detail as possible. I know nothing about the celebrations in the city other than what I can google online. Thanks!

I know you also PMed me but I'll reply you here.
I'm not based in Beijing and have no experiences of spending Chinese New Year there so there's nothing specific that I can tell you.
Chinese New Year Eve is a family reunion affair, if you don't have local friends who are going to invite you to their home to partake of it, it would be rather dull.
I'm quite sure the 15th day would be more lively and interesting for you.

Ellyse is pretty much right, for Spring Festival itself.

I've been in Beijing in the week after Spring Festival and the best thing I can recommend is the temple fairs. I've been meaning to write a review on it but haven't had the time yet.

I recommend Dongyue (东月) temple. The temple fairs are a traditional place for the Chinese to hang out in the days after Spring Festival. There's the temple itself to explore and then lots of side stalls selling souvenirs, lots of games for the kids etc. Also I saw the dragon/lion dancing there and a Beijing Opera performance.

I appreciate your post. Would you recommend going for the end of the celebration then? Would the Lantern Festival on the 15th be a bigger deal than New Years Day on the 7th? Your input is appreciated!
