What's the best and cheapest way to get from downtown Kunming to the Stone Forest? Are there busses? From where do they leave?

You can take eigher bus and train from Kunming to Stone Forest(Shilin). The bus station is close to the Kunming Southern Railway Station.

Spring Festival is mainly a family reunion affair. There might be fireworks and firecrackers around, and definitely countdown shows on TV on the night of 25/1, though in Chinese only.
Or else, hang around the train station if you want to experience the Spring Festival transport crush... not really recommended if you value your sanity, perhaps!
