Countless“Beauty Contests” are staging at almost every corner of the world. However, have you ever seen any “Ugly Persons Contest”? Recently, a faddish girl held a contest at one of the most prosperous downtown areas in Shenzhen, aiming to select the “ Ugliest Person”. Her poster says every contestant will get 100 Yuan. Once the poster was released, several participants hurried to register. Among the contestants, several are disfigured. According to sources, this contest was sponsored by a company that manufactured fire fighting equipment and “ The Ugliest Person” will be awarded a prize of 10,000 Yuan.

This move has caused public outrage among the city-dwellers of Shenzhen. Some city-dwellers think that it is a mockery of “ the ugly persons” and the company should be condemned. One shouldn’t seek fun and pleasure at the expense of others’ dignity. Dear friends, what are your attitudes for this phenomenon? Will you attend suck kind of contest for the sake of money?

I don't know if I'm uggly enough to be a contestant! - lol

But seriously, I don't think this is right and this is a really bad 'marketing' idea of organising and/or sponsering a such event. It's just plain irrespectful and really illogic to me.

It kind of reminds me the discussion of the other day on another forum thread (skin biz for schooling or something...): when we were discussing about how prostitutes lose their souls, principles/values for money. Well here you go: a 100 kwai and join the freakshow!!

And what is that: the idea was not stupid enough on its own, they had to do a calendar from it too???!!! Ridiculous!

GUEST17181 well, for the first time in their life, they don't have to be ashamed of their looks and they can get money for it too. so why not?
the principle behind it is the same as that behind beauty contests. it's just looking at people's superficial appearance as a grounds for receiving recognition. when it comes to beauty contests, it's not all good. i can imagine guys sitting at home, drinking a beer and thinking about what they would like to do to those beauty contestants... it's not all that respectful either, to treat someone like a piece of meat...

Woooh!

They don't have to be ashamed? Why? Because they get a 100 kwai for it, get their picture taken and bring probably many times that amount of money to that big company, it makes it OK. I don't think so!!!

Nice try GUEST17181, but your arguments won't make me see things differently.

A beauty contest is something that the contestants 'work' for and are proud of and that almost everybody envy. This Ugly person contest on the other hand, is just a cheap distraction at the expense of the less fortunate.

A real good contest would be one showing the beauty contest before and after; like on stage and whern they wake up in the morning. That could show all that beauty is superficial and that beer can also make things much better looking than they really are- lol!!!

And btw, I don't see what kind of lack of respect it is for those guys at home thinking what they would do to those beautiful women....that is human nature man!! no disrespect there; I'm sure those girls are not going to those contests to please the eyes (and imagination) of their mommy.....
