Price of tea?
Jan 8, 2008 01:16
guestDerrick What is the average price for a brick of Pu-erh. Are prices of chinese tea on ebay super inflated to what it would cost in china? Because they seem to be 2-5x more expensive than what they charge in china.

I do not know a great deal about tea, however, perhaps this will give you a start.

Tea can be purchased in raw form, cooked form, or aged in China. Raw tea needs to be aged to have a smooth, clean taste. Cooked tea has been "aged" in the cooking/fermentation process that I know nothing about; it has a taste resembling the taste of an aged tea. Tea is aged just as fine cigars are aged with the optimum aging time around 5 years.

Prices for tea vary wildly. I bought a kilo of raw pu'er tea for 200 RMB and a kilo of cooked pu'er tea for 250 RMB. There was a kilo of aged pu'er tea available for 1250RMB.

I am certain there are many people here with the knowledge to correct my errors and provide more authoritative information.

Of course ebay will be inflated prices. The items will be sold from anywhere in the world so the seller has to pay to get it and try to make profit, plus you pay for postage.
If you can then buy tea in China and try to avoid popular tea houses or tourist spots. I came home with 9 different types of tea this year but paid very little for it. But when I buy the tea here in UK it is expensive.

Davec, if you don't mind, what kind of tea did you buy? and how much did it cost?

I did the same thing, I stuffed a luggage case full of tea to bring back to the states, 10 months later, I am all out. I mostly bought high quality Oolong's, one of which was a Ginseng Oolong which I paid 58 RMB for a kilo which I gave away my last pack to a dear friend for Christmas and decided to check around to get some more, around 60 bucks online and locally compared to 8 in China for the same thing. Really good stuff though.

I bought bags of green tea from chengdu, Jasmine flower tea from Guangzhou and different pu'er teas in Lijiang. To be honest I cant remember exact prices but it wouldnt have been too much, my skills at bartering have increased dramatically on my last 2 trips.

I forgot, I also got some white tea, which I have never tried before. It was a flower similar to jasmine but in the pot it is not so strong.
