To raise the college tuition fee or not has been discussed heatedly in China. A report said that an economist supported to raise the college tuition fee. He said that there were only 10 to 20% percent poor students in colleges. The college authorities can use tuition fee they have collected to offer more education loans and set up more scholarships. In this way, those poor students can continue their study in colleges.

What do you think of his idea? Can tuition fee increase can help those poor students to finish their college study?

Personally, I don't think so. For those students from rural areas, college tuition fee is a big problem. Many of them bought money from their relatives to enter the colleges. Unluckily, some of them have no other choice but to quit their study. Why? they don't have money. To raise tuition fee is to add fuel to the flames. How can they afford this?

If the increased tuition really goes to help deserving poor students it is a great idea.

Nice (political) stories rarely have happy endings in the US.

Well, I don't think it can help those poor students. To offer education loans is banks' responsibility. On the other hand, scholarships are for top students. How can school authorities make sure that those poor students are top students? What's more, the scholarship can not help all poor students since there are many poor students and competition for scholarship is fierce. My suggestion is to remit the tuition fee. But it seems impossible. At least, we can reduce tuition fee imposed on those poor students. It is said that the government made a policy that those students who study in normal universities needn't pay tuition fee. All they want to do is sign a contract with the college. After graduation, they should serve as teachers in some places according to their college's requirements. This is really good.

GUEST01286 The answer depends on whether you consider secondary education to be a privilege or a right. Currently, it is a privelege. If it should become seen as a right, then a financial assistance mechanism must be installed to allow access to everyone. This would include loans, bursaries, scholarships, awards...

As for raising tuition fees with an eye to increasing the enrollment of poorer students...we all know this will never work, since this money will not find its way "down" to those who cannot afford it in the first place.

I agree with Jimmy.

It was policy in many western countries to offer free or cheap tertiary education on the grounds that it would help poorer young people get an education. I am one such person, but I was in a minority, most tertiary students come from relatively wealthy families. Then they will get the better paid jobs too. So the policy did not work.

Now students must pay a rate much closer to the economic cost. They will benefit from higher salaries and we assume a better life afterwards so why shouldn't they pay?

The government then has the option of offering financial assistance to those who need it - they can do this through student grants and loans depending on their ideas on this and how much they want to assist the poorer students and perhaps those going into specialist areas like teaching and nursing (though if there is a need to assist these students over others, simply reflects that the salaries in these professions are too low!)

Do you guys here read this sentence before? Knowledge can change your destiny. Many people believe in this sentence, especially those poor people. If you know this, you will understand that why some Chinese parents work very hard to make their children go to school. "If you are admitted to college, your father and I will try our best to make you finish your study." The words are repeated many times by different parents. Do you believe that knowledge can change your destiny?

I think it is quite often that college students are dependent on their parents while studying. They still live at their parent´s home - at least it is their official address - and get supported by them.
Here we have many social benefits that are binded to incomes. If benefits are coming to a student under certain age living in parent´s home, his/her benefits are depended of parent´s income.
That way all talented would have equal possibilities for education, no matter rich or poor.

"Knowledge can change your destiny"
I definitely believe that, but, like my friend´s mother once, years ago, said to me: It is not enough to learn at school, must live and learn from life, too. Because after school You only know the same all others know after school.

That's ture, Carlos. After getting a job, you will find that what you have learned in college is far enough. In order not to be fired, you need to learn in your working. However, some guys don't believe that 'Knowledge can change your destiny'. They argue that going to college is useless because you also can't find a job after graduation and you are in debt. That is why some young guys choose to work earlier in factories instead of keeping their study.
