The military world has the most rigid hierarchy. Different countries have different military hierarchical structures. The sub-level should report directly to the superior level. In troops, there is no freedom but discipline. Obeying the order is the duty of soldiers. In troops, it is quite normal to see the maltreatment. The veterans maltreat the newly-recruited soldiers. Military's goal is to make the subordinates institutionalized. Corporal , sergeant, staff sergeant are at the bottom of the military hierarchy. Oh, different countries have different miltary titles. What are they? Can you share with me?

GUESTROAM There are many " maltreatment of newcomers" cases in troops. The old veteran usually beat the green hands hard. It is like a dark hell.

To a civilian, it would look like a maltreatment but it is part of the training. A soldier, especially a neophyte is trained to harden their will. They would need that once they are in combat and in case they get captured so they won’t be a softie. I’m not sure if they still get paddled and punched or kicked in their guts, apart from various physical endurance and survival training. Usually, the motto is “Obey first before you complain”. They also have a rigid chain of command.

Indeed, maltreatment is part of trainning in troops. A principle in troops states: you have to be tortured before you have the right to torture others.

when you speak of "maltreatment" the first thing that comes to mind is the old Soviet/ new Russian Army where recruits are physically beaten.
In the U.S. ever since the 1860's it has been a serious, punishable offense for an officer to strike or threaten a lower ranking soldier. Non-Commissioned officers ( Sergeants and corporals) are also forbidden from abusing those under them and that has lately included verbal abuse.
Any charges are taken very seriously and investigated and prosecuted. Any soldier has the right to ask for an investigation. This leads to an Army where each member respects each other and they can concentrate on the task at hand.

Actually, maltreatment is often exercised in the name of 'Discipline".
