Hi! A friend and I are travelling from Shanghai to Beijing to Xi'an and then back to Shanghai. We are trying to decide whether to take the train or to fly- we may do both. I would like to see some of the Chinese countryside and take one part of the journey during the day. Any suggestions as to which part of the trip would be the most interesting to be awake for? Thanks!

Shanghai, Beijing and Xi'an are three popular tourist cities in China, but there are located far from each other. It may not be wise to travel by train.

Beijing to Shanghai:9 hours 59 minutes trip by the fastest train. Xi'an to Shanghai: 13 hours 56 minutes by the fatest train. Beijing-Xi'an 11 hours at least. Wish these help you to decide which vehicle to take.

They're not close to each other, but the train links are good, and it won't take long! I would advise doing Shanghai - Xi'an - Beijing - Shanghai all on overnight trains. The scenery for Shanghai - Xi'an is quite interesting after you leave Henan province and will be seen in the daytime.

There is not a lot to see along these routes. In each case the better scenery is in the southern end of the routes, There is little to see in Hebei province - ie the 5 hours plus, closest to Beijing on both lines. I haven't headed south west from Hebei into Shanxi by train, but on my road trip I remember coal and more coal in northern Shanxi and a very brown impoverished landscape. Further south are some nice hills but again brown. This is a dry area.
