We're first time China travelers with two weeks to spend. Viking River Cruises looks like a reasonable trip and price. Would like to hear comments from anyone that has been on their trips to China.

Something quickly come to my mind:

populous yet vibrant and young

culturally rich, fascinating

Economically powerful, booming. Think the Gold-rush era of late 1900 of California.

very rich people and very poor people

either cold or hot

most traffic signals are not always obeyed. Expect some not-quite-as-same-as-here driving etiquette.

no body is obese over there, as everybody pedals bike.

US will cede the #1 economy power to China in this Century

Oh! Someone actually reads what I write! I like your synopsis, I wish people in the business meetings I used to attend could cut through to the essence like that.

I don't think you will notice the rich and poor situation very much, as the rich are perhaps like westerners in their homeland. Though if you get into the countryside you will notice peasants rather than farmers,

Vibrant, definitely.

Culturally rich and fascinating.... that didn't come from my posts, I don't find this especially so as so much has been lost, but many other members do. Jabarootoo does, I know. Maybe I have travelled to too many countries, or to the wrong places in China!. It is interesting at least, so come and decide for yourself: you will surely enjoy yourself.

Yes there are obese people, and many men with pot bellies, but nothing like the western countries. This is a new phenomenon and nothing to do with western food, just an overindulgence in good Chinese food which in many areas has mnore oil in one dish than you would use in a week.

Have fun :)

Sorry JohnF... I thought your post was the same person as the first.. so my comments are a bit out of context....but never mind, they mostly hold true.. I should stick to writing in the midnight to 2 am timeslot, and to teaching in the mornings - the students never notice the mistakes :)

No problem. I guess I am the guy who should say sorry. But I'm too new here, I had only several posts, and have only read posts published in the last 5 days or so.
