China's big size and its huge population overwhelms the rest coutries. I lurk around on this forum and found many people believed that China is a rich country now. A obvious phenomenon is that many Chinese have begun to private cars. Suppose it is true, can you imagine what you will happen if every Chinese has a car and they drive out on the way at the same? A magnificent scene? Does China have enough gasoline to fuel the giant "gasoline-guzzlers"?

At present, China has only no more than 100 million private cars, there have been so many traffic accidents and congestions everyday. In big cities, it has become a serious problem for city-dwellers to find somewhere to park their cars. Some people may argue that, with the advancement of science and technology, we can make our cars smaller and build more roads. Here, I just want to say we should rely on science and technology, but we shouldn’t cherish too much illusion for science. No matter how small can we try to make our cars, 1.3 billion cars would take up a lot of space. Nowadays, we have occupied too many farming lands to build roads. It is true that science and technology can help improve the fertility and productivity of soil to a certain extent, but it can not perform miracles all the time. So China’s large population and the limited land resource require we must restrict the use of private cars. The only good way for way out for China's transportation future is to develop public transportation.

That´s what all others are afraid of, a billion more cars.
Hey, and let´s not forget India. Now I think there´s the answer to question can we do something about greenhouse phenomenon.

More private cars mean more air pollution, while developing public transportation will help reduce the emission of waste gases into atmosphere.

At present, the fast fuel consumption has posed a serious challenge for global energy security. It is estimated that if we continue to consume oil at present rate, the global oil will be run out in the next 150 years. In the past two years, the price of oil has increased to a record-high level since the oil crisis in 1973, which has severely damaged the stability of global economy. China, the second largest oil-consuming country, is importing tens of thousands of tons of oil annually to fuel our cars. Under the current circumstance that we haven’t developed an ideal and efficient fuel to replace gasoline; we have to restrict the use of private cars in order to save energy.

From the perspective of environmental protection, too many cars give off a large amount of pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide. These toxic gases endanger people’s health.

First, the Chinese government could lift the ban on motorcycle use in some of the big cities where they are forbiden.
Then they could follow other countries and ask everyv ehicule owner to get his/her ride tested for emissions level and fixed accordingly when max levels are not met.

But hey, this is just two thoughs I had in 1 minutes and we're talking about a country that sells the fuel for less than it actually cost to buy: they subsidize it believe it or not!!!

When oh when people will stop thinking that cars stimulate a country's economy; short term maybe, but what in 50 no, 20 year's from now???
...since then...I ride my bike!

Oh, another thought: even if the car would emit no pollutants, the streets of chinese cities are so dusty that you would still have fine particules in suspension in the air wich is not to great for your health either... just a constatation like that...

The air quality in most Chinese cities is not pleasant. The pollutants emitted by cars contributes a lot to the poor air quality. IMO, a better solution might be to find new clean enery to fuel cars. For instance, in some regions of China's Henan province, alcohol is being used to replace fossil fuel to fuel cars.Certainly, the number of cars still should be limited since 1.3 billion is an astronomical number.
