Going to be in China from March to April do I need a coat? Whats the weather like then?

Yes of course you will need a coat and remember China is a huge country and you could experience all four seasons in a few days depending on where you'll be travelling. Nights are cooler in most places even if it is warm during the day. If there is now sun it is quite a bit cooler too.

Jabaroo is right that China is a big country, so where do you plan to go?

Down here in southern Guangdong you should not need a coat. For the last few days it has been too hot to wear a sweater in the daytime. I find some useful temperature figures indirectly through a teacher recruitment site. Go to anesl.com, look for jobs in yr chosen state, then on the list click on the province name. The page that comes up has monthly min and max for 2 cities for the province.

I shall be going to Shanghai, Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, Guilin, Yangshou, Hong Kong and Macau.

Yes, you definitely need a coat. Down coat for anything around or north of Shanghai.
