Entering China, how much hard currency can i take?

1) How much hard USD or british currency can i take into China, i am also travelling through Hong Kong?

2) How much hard currency can i take out of China and Hong Kong?

At far as I know, at most 20,000 Yuan in cash can be taken into and out of China for each person.

I can't remember but it is a reasonable amount per head both ways and I have on at least one occasion carried over the prescribed limit out of the country.

I don't declare it and I've never been asked about money on any occasion. But if you were carrying suitcases of cash then the scanners would pick this up.

It's not a good idea to be carrying it all on you if you don't have to.

You can withdraw cash in RMB from thousands of ATMs using your own debit cards which is far more practical.

When I first travelled to China I was told I could take maximum of 6000Y so thats what I took along with £200 in travellers cheques.
I spent 3 weeks in China and still brought lots of the money home.
