In the case of Korean cold storage explosion, 12 Chinese died and each family got 1,950,000 yuan death compensation. How sad it is! After the accident ceased, people have started to discuss death compensation in China.

According to the law, the upper limit of death compensation in China is 400000 yuan. A lawyer in Beijing thinks that people's life is worth much. He suggests that the upper limmit of death compensation should be raised to 3 million. He cites an example to support his stance. Some cruel drivers would rather hit somebody to death than to send him to the hospital. Why? To hit somebody to death, he just needs to pay death compensation. Otherwise, he may support the injured till death. To raise death compensation, this phenomenon might be ceased.

What do you think? How much is life worth?

I can put no price on the lives of my two Boys. No amount of money would be able to heal the wound of them dying before me. If I could I would exchange my own soul for theirs.

It is an interesting situation.

What really is the problem? Is the death premium too low? Or... Is hospitalization too costly?

Will raising the death premium really prevent people from killing people with their automobiles?

I guess this situation explains why automobile insurance is required in this country.

Speaking of drivers...If you can't parallel park, or manuever your vehicle in a small, contained space such as a parking lot, then you have no business driving on the common roadways. According to this logic, 95% of Chinese are unqualified to drive a car.

I don’t think the compensation is meant to “equate monetary value to a life”. Whether the person is related to you or not, common sense tells you that 1, 3, not even 300 million yuan is enough price for a life. The family of the girl who died in the train accident got 500,000 yuan. The money is just a form of consolation. The fact that people are focusing on the money makes me think that they are trying to put monetary value to a life, which, to me is kind of absurd.

Griz, the death premium is too low and hospitalization is too high. Just imagine, if the driver hits a man with his car and finally the doctor told him that the injured has become a vegetable, what would he do? He has to support him till death. How can he afford it? Well, if he hit him to death, he just needs to pay death compensation to that man's family.

"Will raising the death premium really prevent people from killing people with their automobiles? "

It may be helpful but can't solve that problem. IMO, if the driver kill the injured with their cars intentionally, he would be punished severely.

Compensation should be sufficient so the family can live as well as they would have, and compensation for the loss of a loved one.

Yes, Paul. But the punishment for those who hit people to death intentionally should be more severe.

Punishment and compensatyion are different. I think that compensation for the loss of a loved is appropriate. Beyond that, criminal law can apply punishment such as gaol sentences or fines.

Yes, Paul. I still strongly suggest that those drivers who hit sb to death intentionally be punished severely. Once the newspaper reported that a microbus driver hit a person and ran away with the deadman dragged behind for a long distance. Finally, the driver was arrested. How cruel he was! When asked, he said that he just wanted to ensure that that man was dead. In this way, he just needed to pay death compensation for his family. If that man was alive, he would take care of him till death.
