| A Dream of Red Mansions is one of the Four Classics in Chinese Literature History. In 1983, the classic novel was adapted to screenplay. Shortly after the TV series was released in 1987, it became a household name. A Dream of Red Mansions tells a tragic love story in feudal China. The leading actress Chen Xiaoxu made her name through playing the role of Lin Dai Yu. She died last year at the age of only 40 or something. This beloved actress shaped a vivid image of a compassionate and sentimental girl. Now, television producers are planning to remake the old classic. Recently, the cast has been revealed. The director Li Shaohong announced that Yao Di and Bai Bing will star as the two heroines, Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai, respectively. Usually, a remaking of an old classic ended up with failure. Few sequel can exceed the previous one. Will this remaking be an expection? |

| The classic A Dream of Red Mansions is a great tragedy. It occupies an important status in Chinese literature history since it is the first book that concentrates on the "trivial daily lives" of a bunch of girls in a feudal aristocratic family. Meanwhile, A Dream of Red Mansions is a realistic novel. It is an epitome of the late Qing Dynasty. The feudal system was going down. Feudal doctrines and morality were challegened by a group of rebellious teenagers who fight for freedom and love. Although in face of destiny they end up tragically, their bravery is highly praised. The 1987 version is a good one. Chen Xiaoxu did a good job in shaping the characther of Lin Daiyu. I can't imagine any remaking could surpass the 1987 version. |
