![]() | The 2008 presidential campaign is on the stage. Can you predict which party will win, the Donkey or the Elephant? I don't know why the two parties got the nicknames. (The Elephant refers to Republicans?) Will US withdraw its troops in Iraq after the election, since many candidates promised to withdraw US in order to win more votes? |

![]() | It is much too soon to guess who will win the US Presidential election. Perhaps the year of the rat is the year we elect Micky Mouse. ;-) |

![]() | Donkey is an intersting choice by the Democrats. It has two connotations in western culture. Stupidity - as donkeys are considered stupid; peace - for example, christ rode on a donkey on a famous occasion to symbolise he came in peace. I assume it was for the latter reason the Democrats chose the donkey. |

![]() | I looked up the donkey & elephant political symbols and here is what I found: "The donkey gained its acceptance as the Democratic symbol in 1874 as a result of Thomas Nast's cartoons in Harper's Weekly and Ignatius Donnelly's remark in the Minnesota Legislature, "The Democratic party is like a mule--without pride of ancestry or hope of posterity." The elephant became known as a Republican symbol also because of a cartoon designed by Nast and published in Harper's Weekly (November 7, 1874.)" WEB LINK: http://www.santacruzpl.org/ |
