3 week itinerary
Feb 3, 2008 04:21
guest29210 Before I start on planning a 3 week itinerary I need advice on where I should go. The research I've done shows that we can't see China in such a short time so we're planning on splitting it up in two 3 week hoildays this year & next. We've already been to Hong Kong so we won't include it. We will fly into Beijing & Fly out of Shanghai.
Can someone please start me off with a rough guide for the first 3 week holiday. We will be going around the 10th of October.

You can see a good portion of Beijing, including the great wall, within 3 or 4 days (depending on what you really want to see).
Xi'an (where the terra cotta soldiers are) is perhaps the next biggest hotspot, although I have never been there. It is probably about 12 hours by train.
Depending on how much money you are willing to spend, Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong in sichuan (in songpan county) have amazing natural scenery, particularly in october, unlike anything I have seen. However, it is too far to get to by train and the price of a plane ticket from Beijing is $350 each way. Likewise, the altitude is so high here that you may suffer headaches and shortness of breath for a few days, until you get acclimated. If your travels take you to Chengdu, I recommend getting a plane there (still pricey) for a few days. Worth it.
There are old Buddhist grottos in Shanxi province (west of Beijing) near Datong called the Yungang caves. The carvings are 500-1000 years old. The grottos are 1 of about 4 such places throughout china. This is about a 10 hr train ride from beijing. There is also a hanging temple there (suspended on a rockface) and other temple along a nearby mountainside. Not very far in the same province is an old city enclosed in wall- Yaoping, although I haven't been here. There is also Wutai shan, one of several sacred mountains in china.
Yangshuo/guilin are adjacent cities in Guangxi province (far south). You can probably find a relatively cheap plane ticket there and back. This is one of the most popular travel sites in china and chances are you've seen it's karsts and rivers in a movie (picturesque, and often depicted in old chinese paintings). When I went, I took a plane to Tongren in Guizhou, and from there took a car to a place called Feng Huang (Pheonix city)in Hunan. It is a small town along the river, seemingly little known, yet accommodates backpacker types well due to its growing tourism. Pretty place. At a nearby city, I took a train to Yangshuo/guilin.
Plenty of places to go, although beijing is the only really westernized city in the north (Tianjin a distant second)

GUEST29210 Thanks for your help. I'm looking into all your suggestions. At the moment I've only got as far as 5 nights in Beijing then overnight train to Xian with a 2 night stay.

I do think you should tell us what you are interested in doing and seeing and your style of travel and accommodation. It will help people give suitable replies.

GUEST29210 We are interested in seeing everything that's worth seeing so that's why we will do China in more than one trip. As I said we were thinking about 2 seperate trips but it could also be 3 or 4 depending on what we manage to see each time so there's no point in hopping from one side of China to the other.
We don't have a budget & can fly between places & usually stay in 4 or 5 star hotels but this isn't necessary if there's a nice guesthouse somewhere we would stay there.

How on earth are we supposed to know what you would deem "worth seeing"? We don't even know you, let alone your likes and dislikes.
