Living in Shanghai

It looks like my family (my wife and baby) will be moving from the USA and living in the Shanghai area for about a year. I will be traveling to Taicang to work every day and wanted to know a good place to live where speaking Chinese is not a must. Also, could you provide how much rent would be in a nicer apartment of 2-3 bedrooms.

I am also trying to figure out how money I will need monthly to live a modest lifestyle. I understand that there are western style restaurants that cost roughly the same as here in USA, but we would probably only eat there once a week. Also, I will need to look a flight from LAX to Shanghai and any suggestions on airlines, where to look, tips, etc.

And, if you have any tips that are a must they would be gretly appreciated.

I think the only direct flight would be on United Airlines UA857.
