Hi there...I am looking for any hot tips on travel via Trans - sib rail from Beijing to Lhasa. I will be in China for 2 weeks, incorporating this train journey. Has anyone done it, and can you give me an approximate budget one needs for these 2 weeks? Also do you book the train ticket from UK, or is it easy enough when you get there? Do you have to have a permit to get into tibet, and how do you get these? Does it take a few days? Is it absolutely necessary to get one? I heard you can ask a Chinese person to buy the rail tickets and thus will not have to pay for the permit..but I don't want any hassle or the feeling i may get fined/caught out. Thanks for your help....Would be grat to have a contact in Beijing if anyone knows any other artists?

If you're taking the train both ways, I think you'll need 2 weeks to do that, plus see Beijing and Lhasa. The train takes 2 days each way so that's a total of 4 days, you'll have 10 days to do the rest.
Contact Leo Hostel (http://www.leohostel.com) to arrange for tickets and paperwork.
