Here is a full text of appology: (source: CNN)

Mr Rudd

I give notice that, at the next sitting, I will move:

Today we honour the Indigenous peoples of this land, the oldest continuing cultures in human history.

We reflect on their past mistreatment.

We reflect in particular on the mistreatment of those who were Stolen Generations -- this blemished chapter in our nation's history.

The time has now come for the nation to turn a new page in Australia's history by righting the wrongs of the past and so moving forward with confidence to the future.

We apologise for the laws and policies of successive Parliaments and governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these our fellow Australians.

We apologise especially for the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, their communities and their country.

For the pain, suffering and hurt of these Stolen Generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry.

To the mothers and the fathers, the brothers and the sisters, for the breaking up of families and communities, we say sorry.

And for the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people and a proud culture, we say sorry.

We the Parliament of Australia respectfully request that this apology be received in the spirit in which it is offered as part of the healing of the nation.

For the future we take heart; resolving that this new page in the history of our great continent can now be written.

We today take this first step by acknowledging the past and laying claim to a future that embraces all Australians.

A future where this Parliament resolves that the injustices of the past must never, never happen again.

A future where we harness the determination of all Australians, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to close the gap that lies between us in life expectancy, educational achievement and economic opportunity.

A future where we embrace the possibility of new solutions to enduring problems where old approaches have failed.

A future based on mutual respect, mutual resolve and mutual responsibility.

A future where all Australians, whatever their origins, are truly equal partners, with equal opportunities and with an equal stake in shaping the next chapter in the history of this great country, Australia.

Most parts of the list are correct although the author seems to be a little ironic. America achieved as much as it failed.

I am shocked at the falsehoods presented in the first post. Each item is worthy of discussion. for example, Indian tribes are plentiful and enjoy special status in dealing with local and Federal authorities. Because many have assimilated and do not live in TeePees or wear war paint does not mean they were wiped out as a people. The territory we acquired from Mexico was paid for in cash when we could have just seized it. In fact we returned to Mexico territory that the Republic of Texas had claimed after Texas joined the U.S.
Also negroes were not enslaved by the U.S. They were slaves already when sold here.
As for the Civil War, the North(The U.S. Government)fought to preserve the Union and the South ( those States that seceded from the U.S.A.) fought to preserve negro slavery. The war was stirred up by the slaveowners, not the Federal Government. the Federal Government then ended slavery by passing Constitutional amendments.
The U.S. was not responsible for the partition of Korea. The U.S. wanted it to be free from Japanese rule and have a self supporting government.
How did the U.S. "destroy" vietnam? and why do many there welcome back Americans?
As for surpressing Cuba, we freed it from colonial rule ( in 1898) and ensured its independence. Castro overthrew a ligitimate elected government and the U.S. ceased doing business with them. China and Russia never stopped doing business with them.
The Cold war was created by the Soviet Union and no one else.
I would enjoy discussing these issues with others.

Paul does seem to have gone around the bend for some reason in the last six months or so - but it is not as if America's dominance doesn't earn the scorn. China seems to be next up for that scorn...I do not think the spotlight will reflect on Australia any time soon.

This title and its list of content are malicious to say the least.
Once we start talking about any country in this way politics come into play.
As it would be impossible to fairly debate most political topics on this forum it is unfair to single out any one nation for it’s perceived shortcomings.

YINDUFFY, no political system is perfect in the world. Currently, we are living in a globe where people are labelled as "different classes" . "Class struggle" still exists and will be there for a long time. In the past, the old Chinese slogan was: the Cold War in nature embodies the conflict between Capitalism and Communism (namely Bourgeois Vs Proletariate). Today, we don't see it. It is all about political dissents.

Well, your statement "the Cold war was created by the Soviet Union and no one else" sounds too sentimental and biased. In Chinese, we have a saying: 一(yí)个(gè)巴(bā)掌(zhǎng)拍(pāi)不(bù)响(xiǎng),one hand can not give a big clap. In the West, you have the saying: " it takes two to tango".

Leonardo, perhaps you should ask the view of the people of Eastern Europe what they thought about living under a system that was imposed by force.
A wall was built to stop them leaving. The US didn’t build that wall but the people eventually pulled it down.
This “class struggle” that you talk about is nothing more than the remnants’ of a pseudoscientific theory written in the 19th centenary, long exposed as rubbish that still lingers in the minds of some. One of the corner stones of that doctrine was that it needed to be spread world wide. Lenin was quoted as saying this during the October revolution.
It certainly takes two to tango but one was a very reluctant partner.
