I am planning on taking a digital camera to China. I took one in 2001 but then they were new so I guess they weren't widespread. I will be a female living in China for a year alone. Is it too risky to carry a digital camera?

Also, has anyone used Australian chargers with adaptors to charge Australian batteries. I found Chinese batteries of very low quality

There is quiet a lot of opportunistic, petty theft and pickpocketing in China, compared to what you might expect in Australia. I was careless, once, and had only myself to blame when my camera was stolen (all right, I could blame the thief as well).

Generally, though, if you take the sort of precautions that you know you ought to, then you should have no problems. Digital cameras are no longer rare or unusual in China and do not draw special attention from thieves.

Taking cameras is fine, I carry 2 cameras and 6 lenses, about 9kg. I would comfortably walk anywhere with it and not worry but then I am a big guy. I never felt nervous walking even at night.
Just take usual caution and dont leave gear unattended or sitting on a table etc
As for charging again I had no problems, I take leads with UK 3 pin plugs and also 2 pin euro plus an adaptor to convert to chinese 2 pin. I find the 2 pin euro easiest as it will plug into any shaver sockets in the hotels.

Interesting about the power point pins. I come from Australia where we have three pin sockets. I have found Australia to Asia adaptors but these only take two pin Australian plugs (without the earth) so I think I might have to go through European or American to get to Chinese. When I was there I remember a two straight pin power point rather than a three pin with round American-style earth.
