 | The reports said that Steven Spielberg had withdrawed from Beijng Olympic Games as an artistic adviser for China's stance on Darfur issue. China said that linking Darfur issue to the Olympic Games won't help resolve this issue and is against Olympic spirit. BTW, it is said that about about 60 leaders from other countries will attend the Beijing Olympic Games. |

| It's difficult to reply 'carefully' on this topic. China says such actions won't help resolve the problem in Darfur, others consider that publicising the issue in this way will help because China does not want issues around the Olympics. There is certainly some potential for China to apply influence, but there is OIL in the region! While it might be against the Olympic Spirit to act as Spielberg has done, trying to help the victims in Darfur is very much in the Humanity Spirit. Many people say we shouldn't bring politics into sport, but politics is part of everything we do. Sport has become incredibly nationalistic - it is no longer about personal achievement which is the TRUE Olympic Spirit, but about nationalism, how many medals can a nation win, national pride. Look at all the money China (and Australia in the past) has put into supporting top sportspersons who are potential medal winners - it is about national status which is a part of international politics. More questions on 'Olympic Spirit'. The Olympics are a branded business which makes vast sums of mopney each year. Sure it has no shareholders in the normal sense, but is more of a co-operative of nation members. But a hell of a lot of people are making big dollars out of it: the senior personnel, the national personnel, the sportsmen, and the sponsors. Then we have the issue of drugs. is it any longer possible for a drug free competitor to win a medal? I doubt it. So much as I love sport, if by swearing not to watch any on TV I could help the victims in Darfur, I would do so. |
