Federer and Henin win Laureus World Sportspersons of the Year

On Feb.18th, the ninth Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony was held in SAINT PETERSBURG, Russia. The most shining tennis stars Federer and Henin are awarded as Laureus World Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year. It is the straight fourth time that Roger Federer has been entitled as the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year. In 2007, Federer won the grand slams of Australian, American and Wimbledon titles. Unluckily, he was disqualified for the final of 2008 Australian Open. He has been World No.1 for four consecutive years. Henin wins Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year for the first time. She also did a good job in 2007. She claimed the grand slams of American and French Opens. At 2008 Australian Open, she was eliminated by Sharapova who finally won the title.

Laureus World Sportsman of the Year: Roger Federer (Switzerland, tennis)

Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year: Justine Henin (Belgium, tennis)

Laureus World Team of the Year: South African Rugby Team

Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year: Lewis Hamilton (Britain, motor racing)

Laureus World Comeback of the Year: Paula Radcliffe (Britain, athletics long distance runner)

Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability: Esther Vergeer (Britain, wheelchair tennis)

Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year: Shaun White (the United States, skateboarder/snowboarder)

Special Awards:

Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award: Sergey Bubka (Ukraine, athletics pole vault)

Laureus Spirit of Sport Award: Dick Pound (Canada, World Anti-Doping Agency)

Federer and Henin performed very well in 2007. However, they didn't have a good start in 2008. Both were kicked out of 2008 Australian Open. Hope they can be in condition and win more Grand Slams. Really want to see Federer tie the record made by Sampras this year.
