Does anyone know what is wrong with B-2 bomber? I heard that miliarty-lovers are having a hot discussion about the subject in USA. The B-2 bomber has some accidents? Does it have some influence on the US airforce? I searched the topic in Chinese but only to get some pics.

Several B-2 Bomber crashed in the past year. The important thing is that B-2 bomber crashed because of the lack of regular maintenance, which supports the assumption that US B-2 bombers had frequent patrol and detective activities overseas.

B-2 Spirit bomber crashes shortly after takeoff in Guam

One of the United States' premier aircraft crashed yesterday in Guam. The B-2 Spirit bomber took off from Anderson Air Force Base (AFB), but crashed shortly after -- thankfully, both pilots were able to eject safely and are listed in good condition.

The downed B-2 Spirit was one of four stealth bombers that were to leave Guam for Missouri after a four-month deployment. One other stealth bomber took to the air before the crash, but was ordered to turn back around and land at Anderson AFB. The three stealth aircraft remain grounded in Guam.

The B-2 Spirit that crashed was unarmed and there were no injuries on the ground or damage to buildings and support vehicles. The only loss was of the $1.2 billion aircraft.

This was the first crash for an operational B-2 Spirit. It's too early to speculate on a cause for the crash, but the Air Force is already piecing together data to conduct its investigation.

The B-2 Spirit was first shown unveiled to the public in 1988 and made its maiden voyage on July 17, 1989. The first operational B-2, the Spirit of Missouri, was delivered to Whiteman AFB on December 17, 1993.

Since its introduction, the B-2 has seen combat service in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq.

The B-2 Spirit was developed by Northrop Grumman Corp. and is powered by four General Electric F-118-GE-100 engines which provide 17,300 lbs of thrust each. The aircraft has a typical takeoff weight of 336,500 pounds (payload of 40,000 pounds), a service ceiling of 50,000 feet, and a top speed in the "high subsonic" range.

There were 21 active B-2 bombers before the crash -- all except the Spirit of Kitty Hawk and Fatal Beauty were named after U.S. states.

From wiki:

It can bomb 16 targets in a single pass when equipped with 1,000 or 2,000-pound bombs, or as many as 80 when carrying 500-lb bombs.

The crash was the most expensive single aircraft crash in history.

Type: Stealth bomber
Maiden flight: 17 July 1989
Introduction: April 1997
Status: Active service
Primary user: United States Air Force
Number built: 21
Unit cost: $737 million to $2.2 billion

Only one B-2 bomber has crashed - ever. Not even in experimental development testing. they have been in service over 15 years. That is a pretty good record, especially as they have been used in military actions far away from home.

The military has released gripping video footage of a February B-2 bomber crash in Guam that the Air Force has concluded was caused by moisture.

The crash was caused by distorted data in the aircraft's flight control computers, according to a report released Thursday. Air Force investigators blame the distortion on moisture in the system, which caused the computers to calculate the wrong airspeed.

The pilot and co-pilot ejected and survived the Feb. 23 crash. The footage released by the Air Force shows the left wing grazing the runway on takeoff, causing the aircraft to burst into flames.

Just prior to the crash, the plane made an sudden nose-up move that investigators concluded was caused by the computer malfunction, which then caused the B-2 to stall.

It marked the first crash of a B-2, one of the Air Force's most expensive and sophisticated aircraft. There had been only 21 B-2 bombers in use, and the estimated cost of the lost aircraft is $1.4 billion.

This aircraft has an excellent record.
Flying any type of military aircraft has very little in common with civilian flying.
The pilots and the aircraft are pushed way beyond any normal expectations of man and machine.
Many countries do not report their military aircraft failures. It would be interesting to compare stats.
