It is reported that EU has made a record fine against Microsoft for defying a landmark 2004 anti-trust ruling. In total, MS needs to pay about 899 million Euros (1.35 billion dollars). The European Commission made a announcement that MS failed to charge rivals reasonable prices for access to key information about its work-group or back-office servers in contravention of the 2004 ruling. The commission once fined Microsoft 497 million euros in March 2004 and ordered the company to open some key software to rivals so they could make compatible products. Last October, MS declared to abide by the anti-trust rules made by EU in 2004 and agreed to offer some key info to its rivals to make their products compatible with Windows system.

MS is forced to share info. how its software works such that rivals products could operate in windows. No matter how much penalty is levied and no matter how much royalty MS charge on sharing codes for rivals products compatible to windows, one thing is for sure – MS’s windows is dominant and its revenues from are optimistic. Good news or bad news or both if we look at things dialectically.

Personally, I think it is good news for Windows users. In this way, users can use more softwares. Take Vista for example, more and more laptops are forced to install vista. For its users, it is not good because many softwares can't be compatible to vista. What's more, if you try to uninstall vista and install XP, your computer will be in trouble. This is what happened to my friend. It is unfair.
