Danny, they are Chinese characters. They are twelve earthly branches. Usually, they are used together with ten heavenly stems to mark the year. To get more info, you can ask help from wikipedia. Here are Ten Heavenly Stems and Twelve Earthly Branches:

天干 The Heavenly Stems
甲 the first of the ten Heavenly Stems
乙 the second of the ten Heavenly Stems
丙 the second of the ten Heavenly Stems
丁 the third of the ten Heavenly Stems
戊 the fifth of the ten Heavenly Stems
己 the sixth of the ten Heavenly Stems
庚 the seventh of the ten Heavenly Stems
辛 the eighth of the ten Heavenly Stems
壬 the ninth of the ten Heavenly Stems
癸 the last of the ten Heavenly Stems

地支 The Earthly Branches
子 the first of the twelve Earthly Branches
丑 the second of the twelve Earthly Branches
寅 the third of the twelve Earthly Branches
卯 the fourth of the twelve Earthly Branches
辰 the fifth of the twelve Earthly Branches
巳 the sixth of the twelve Earthly Branches
午 the seventh of the twelve Earthly Branches
未 the eighth of the twelve Earthly Branches
申 the ninth of the twelve Earthly Branches
酉 the tenth of the twelve Earthly Branches
戌 the eleventh of the twelve Earthly Branches
亥 the last of the twelve Earthly Branches

Note: The twelve earthly branches correspond to the twelve horoscope animals. That is why you just see rat after 子.

Well, I think that I have two qualities: being diligent and stubborn. Sometimes, I stick to what I believe firmly though someone tells me that it is totally wrong. I wouldn't believe untill it is proved. Then someone say:"He is as stubborn as an ox."
