British psychologists and mathematicians have worked out a formula to calculate happiness:
Happiness=P+(5*E)+(3*N)
In the formula, “P” stands for the personality, life philosophy, adaptability and endurance. “E” refers to “ health, wealth, and the level of friendship stability: “N” includes self-asessment, expectation and desire towards life.

The forfuma was concluded based on a survey on 1000 persons. The research also suggests that there is a huge difference in the understanding of happiness. 40% men think that frequent sexual activities make them feel happy. 30% men believe that the favorite football (basketball) teams’ victory make them happy. However, 70% women regards buiding up a family is the happiest thing.

What do you think of this “Happiness Formula”? Can you identify with the result of the research?

It is a formula only a psychologist could love.

If you analyze the concept of "happiness" a bit, certain things become pretty self-evident. Happiness is really quite subjective. For example, that which makes a moral and ethical person happy would be far different than that which would make a serial killer happy! So I have my own formula for happiness that works for almost anyone, despite philosophical and moral and ethical differences.

My formula is HAPPINESS = K + 2F + 5M, where
K is knowledge of that which makes you happy.
F is the freedom to pursue and do that which makes you happy.
M is the means to achieve that which makes you happy.

Too often, if a person knows what would make them happy, they either lack the freedom to pursue their happiness or the means (for example, money) to achieve happiness. In fact, I've found that in many people, one, two, or all three elements are missing or unavailable, and that makes for truly unhappy people.

It's actually very sad, when you think about it, that with so many unhappy people around, it might explain why people are becoming more rude and nasty as time goes by.

Wow, psychologists and mathematicians have hung together. They worked out the "Happiness Formula". Can the formula work well? I would agree more with what Seth said.

Happiness can be inherited, research finds

06 Mar 2008 15:39:16 GMT

LONDON, March 6 (Reuters) - You can't buy happiness but it looks like you can at least inherit it, British and Australian researchers said on Thursday.

A study of nearly 1,000 pairs of identical and non-identical twins found genes control half the personality traits that make people happy while factors such as relationships, health and careers are responsible for the rest of our well-being.

"We found that around half the differences in happiness were genetic," said Tim Bates, a researcher at the University of Edinburgh who led the study. "It is really quite surprising."

The researchers asked the volunteers -- ranging in age from 25 to 75 -- a series of questions about their personality, how much they worried and how satisfied they were with their lives.

Because identical twins share the same genes and fraternal twins do not, the researchers could identify common genes that result in certain personality traits and predispose people to happiness.

People who are sociable, active, stable, hardworking and conscientious tend to be happier, the researchers reported in the journal Psychological Science.

"What this study showed was that the identical twins in a family were very similar in personality and in well-being, and by contrast, the fraternal twins were only around half as similar," Bates said. "That strongly implicates genes."

The findings are an important piece of the puzzle for researchers trying to better understand depression and what makes different people happy or unhappy, Bates said.

People with positive inherited personality traits may, in effect, also have a reserve of happiness to draw on in stressful times, he said.

"An important implication is that personality traits of being outgoing, calm and reliable provide a resource, we called it 'affective reserve,' that drives future happiness" Bates said. (Reporting by Michael Kahn; Editing by Maggie Fox and Mary Gabriel)

Happiness May Be in the Genes

Study Shows Inherited Personality Traits Play a Key Role in Happiness
By Salynn Boyles
WebMD Medical NewsReviewed by Louise Chang, MDMarch 5, 2008 --

People tend to be hardwired for happiness, and new genetic research may help explain why.

Past studies suggest that while 50% of happiness is due to situational factors like health, relationships, and career, the other 50% is due to genes.

The new research identified largely inherited personality traits that researchers say are responsible for much of the genetic influence on happiness.

Having the right mix of these inherited traits leads to a "reserve" of happiness that can be called on in times of stress, they say.

"Traits like being active, sociable, conscientious, and not being overly anxious are related to happiness -- and these are also traits that are inherited," researcher Timothy Bates, PhD, tells WebMD.

((("Happiness can be inherited"? Oh, my god! So it means if the Childeren don't feel happy, it's their parents' fault? ))

I say yes, mainly.
Your child is the by-product of your failures or success as a parent.
Some people want to hide their failures in the shadows of their child.
And so, they bring up monsters, losers, and failures.

Happiness is to love and be love.
Love is loyalty and honesty.

LOL!

That made me think. We don’t really have any control over our genes unless we can start tweaking them. Even choosing partners very well is not a guarantee since some ‘gene defects’ show up randomly. Science is already talking about so-called “designer babies” but that is a long shot because it seems that every good gene characteristic has a bad counterpart.

^_^, I agree. No doubt there is a difference in the understanding of happiness. Women and men are different. They have different interests.
