Do scholars tend to scorn each other?

It can be also called the disillusionment of self-fulfillment. Not only scholars but also average people have that kind of problems.

The reason why scholars are easy to be cynical is that scholars thought themselves of being well-educated. They think too highly of themselves and make light of others. The majority of scholars I met behave in that way.
