| Tom goes to a Chinese shop to buy a quilt. He says to the salesman: “你们这有杯子(被子)吗?” The salesman answered: “Yes.” Then he gives a cup to Tom. Tom shakes his head and says: “我不要杯子,我要被子.” However, the salesman can’t understand what he meant. Then he pretends trembling and says: “我要杯子(被子),不要杯子。”The salesman laughs and says: “那个是被子,不是被子。” Several days later, he comes to the shop again. This time, he wants to buy a pillow. He tells the salesman: “您好!我想买个针头(枕头).” Then salesman answers him: “我们这里不卖针头.” Tom is confused. He sees there are many pillows in the shop but the salesman told him that they didn’t have pillows. Again, he repeated slowly: “我要买一个针头(枕头)。” The salesman answers slowly: “我们这儿没有针头。” Tom is frustrated now. He points at a pillow behind the salesman and says: “我就要那个。” Then the salesman understands and gives a pillow to him, saying: “那是枕头,不是针头.” Do you know why the salesman can’t understand Tom? |
