According to Xinhua News Agency, Chinese ministry of Education says the Chinese government will expand its scholarship program by making 3,000 more awards to foreign students each year from 2008 to 2010.

The Chinese mainland received more than 190,000 foreign students last year, the highest number since the founding of New China in 1949, the Ministry of Education (MOE) said in Beijing on Thursday.

Altogether 195,503 overseas students from 188 countries and regions came to study on the mainland in 2007, up 20.17 percent year-on-year, the ministry's figures showed.

Overseas students entered 544 universities and colleges in 31 Chinese provincial-level areas.

The Chinese government awarded scholarships to 10,151 exchange students, up 19.6 percent over the previous year. Self-funded students totaled 185,352, up 20.2 percent.

By 2020 Chinese universities will enroll 300,000 students from abroad.

A question for foreign friends:

Are you willing to study in China? I have heard many voices critizing China's educational system. What are your ideas about Chinese educational system?

After having read other threads on similar subjects relating to employment opportunities and a college degree, the only benefit I can see would be to learn the Chinese language in a "natural setting". Wouldn't it be rather difficult to be learning the Chinese language and pursue a degree in another field at the same time? Would the cost of a Chinese college degree be less than one obtained from the native country of the student(taking other living expenses into consideration)? Are Chinese college degrees on "par" with other college degrees of other countries?

To be honest, I don’t have any idea about the Chinese education system. But yea, like Gary said, the only thing I can think of considering is studying the Chinese language.

By the way, you mentioned scholarship. Does that mean it's free???? I doubt it but can you explain what that scholarship means?

It would depend entirely on what I was studying.

Not just the language, but traditional culture as well.

There is a small elite group of excellent universities/departments, but it is just a handful. There would be no point in coming to most universities to study as the standard is much lower than western countries and most do not promote critical thought.
