A Cantonese speaker would obviously only write 'Peking' if using romanisation, how they spell it should depend on which system of romanisation they are using.

Beijing or Peking?

Are you a contemporary and modern individual? Then Beijing.

Old and stock in a tree somewhere in history? Then Peking.

GUEST15522 As I recall Mao changed Peking to Beijing some 50 years ago. The Peking duck is now called Beijing duck except here in the US. When I use the term Beijing duck I'm always corrected by my fellow Americans.

I'm married to a Chinese woman from Beijing and have visited there many times. At no time did I ever hear the city referred to Peking, it is now Beijing whether anyone likes it or not. IMO, the people have accepted/adopted Beijing as the proper name. It's be almost 60 years since the name change and many of the "old guard" are gone/dead. The only Peking is the airport whose call letters are PEK. My guess is that Mao could not change that or he would have.
