Most things about life we cannot learn from school, not even from our own parents.

Bill Gates may not be popular to some people but I like him not because he is rich but because he is smart and very practical. He says things as they are and you can tell that he’s been through a lot and that it wasn’t easy. Besides, I’m one of the nerds. ^_^”

This didn't sound like Bill Gates at all to me, BLUESKY001. Bill Gates is a very liberal, feel good, happy horse manure kinda guy. I do not know him personally, but have listened to him speak a number of times. So I Snopes'd it.

http://www.snopes.com/language/document/liferule.asp

The list was actually created by Charles J. Skyes author of the book, "Dumbing Down Our Kids: Why American Children Feel Good About Themselves But Can't Read, Write, or Add" His list has 14 items and doesn't include #11 Be Nice to Nerds.

The list has been floating around the Internet since 2000 saying that Bill Gates said it. Social advisor Ann Landers has published the list, news commentator Paul Harvey has quoted it and newspapers have published it and attributed it to Bill Gates (including the newspaper I used to publish).

Appears to be a "do good thing" for the benefit of Bill Gates. But I can't knock the guy, he certainly has more brain power and smarts than a majority of people.
There has been a decline in quality of education the U.S., but the situation is a good political (ploy) subject and hard to separate "fact" from "fiction". There are "interests" that would dearly love to see the privatization of public schooling and the demise of teacher unions.
