![]() | Ni Men Hao!!!! I am from Melbourne, Australia, aged 28 (Male) of asian heritage though i speak little to none mandarin. Will be visiting Shenzhen on a business trip on the 27th April for 6 days. I will probably be free after the 2nd or 3rd day of the trip and really want to know China better ie its beautiful culture, people and of cos FOOD :) Since its a well earned vacation, i would like to know where to go for great sightseeing etc, i am more interested in history or the cultural aspect of things. Would be well appreciated if there are some well travelled peeps around here that can give me some comments or tips on DOs and DONTs (Heard a couple of "BAD" experiences from colleagues), where to go, where to eat etc. Cheers |

![]() | Unfortunately Shenzhen is probably one of the worst places in China to go if you're looking for history/culture. Guangzhou would be the closest you could go for that, or else you'll most probably have to fly to somewhere like Beijing, Xi'an or Shanghai. |

![]() | MAXXIS. Shenzhen has a wonderful history dating back to the 1980's. You can wander around the city and see historic shopping centres erected over 10 years ago, and witness architecture from the 1990's (unrestored!). You can sample some of the many restaurants specialising in Shenzhen cuisine, using recipes which have remained unchanged for over 3 years. Good luck. |

![]() | Barwon: excellent! Maxxis. You might be better to check out Hong Kong and perhaps Macau. Of course both have a culture affected by their European colonialism, but I find them interesting. If you don't want to travel as far as Ellyse suggests, you could consider Xiamen in southern Fujian (I have not been there but it has a good reputation). Guangzhou is a short trip away by train and has great food opportunities. There is quite a bit to see, though it is not a true tourist town, such as the Chen Family Compound, the dried medicinal 'foods' market (sorry don't know its name), the beads wholesale markets, the historical and gently tourist Shamian island (tho it is more European in style), and you can enjoy a river trip at night, or even a 2 rmb ferry trip on the river in the daytime. |

![]() | While you are in the area, using annual leave sound a great idea! The Lion didn't explain "Window of the World' (he is usually a man of few words!) It is a theme park with scaled replicas of the tourist wonders of the world such as the Eiffel Tower, Sydney Harbour Bridge, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The Chinese think it's fantsatic as few have the chance to travel, but if you have a short time in China, resist all offers to take you there (unless it is an organised trip in work time, of course :) ). |
