Chinese Visas from Kolkata

Hi ...

I am planning a trip by train from Beijing to Kolkata in end-May or early-June 2008. My main worry is obtaining a Chinese visa. I have heard that there are plans to open a Chinese consulate in Kolkata. Does anybody know when the consulate will start issuing visas?

secondly, is it absolutely necessary to produce the train ticket to obtain the Chinese visa? It would help if I could obtain the visa before I spend my money on buying the ticket!

Thanks.

Kunal

It is not normally necessary to have a ticket either in or out before obtaining tickets to China. Some countries require you have a ticket out of the country before they will issue a visa, but China does not have this.

Kunal. Can you outline the route this will be and is this a regular service? I am interested in taking a train to India from China.

Thanks Apault.

I am TERRIBLY sorry ... the "train trip from Beijing to Kolkata" part of my post was a bad typo. I had actually meant to write "...Beijing to Moscow ..." I am really sorry about that. At present, train services do not exist between India and China. You can, of course, take the train to Lhasa (if it isn't out of bounds for foreigners right now), and then take the road to India via Nepal. I believe they have opened the road between India and china through the Sikkim border in eastern India, but I'm not sure. Regular flights exist from Kunming to Kolkata.

Thanks for the information on the Chinese visa. The Chinese Embassy in India website lists a return ticket from China as a requirement for obtaining a Chinese visa, so I am wondering if the chinese authorities are stricter about granting visas to Indians!

Yes, I thought it would be strange that there would be a train link between India and China, too!
